Polygraph training is a mix of master's level academics and intense skill practice. It's not simply a seminar with homework and exams, but rather an active, skill-building experience. Read our article "Considering polygraph school?" for a personal reflection that provides some insights.
At Marston Polygraph Academy, we believe an examiner must be willing and able to think both critically and laterally. Critical thought is the ability to consider multiple points of view or outcomes and evaluate the merit of each. Lateral thought is the application of critical analysis. In the world of polygraph, both must be done quickly while simultaneously managing the psychology of the client and environmental factors, and recording the body's response, second by second. In this article titled "What is the 'Secret Sauce' of Polygraph?", we list some exercises candidates can do at home to help prepare.
There are several considerations that are unique to your own preferences and ideal learning environment, so we have some suggestions to consider before you solidify your travel plans. These are covered in our article "What About Lodging?". We also provide information on local housing options under the Resources tab.
Regardless of the demographic you plan to serve after graduation, understanding sexual preference as a dimension of human behavior can help you work with all clients more effectively. We recommend all polygraph examiners attend the 40-hour certification. There is no additional charge for the PCSOT course for students who enrolled in the Basic Polygraph Examiner course or graduated from Marston Polygraph Academy. Current examiners who graduated from another APA-accredited program are also eligible to attend for $750. For more information, see our article "Should I take the PSOT course?"
